Personal Development 2026
Sedgeberrow CE First School – Personal Development Statement 2026
Together we shine brighter.
At Sedgeberrow CE First School, personal development is not an add‑on to the curriculum—it is the lived experience of every child, every day. School is far more than lessons; it is the sum of the opportunities, relationships, values and enrichment that help children grow into confident, compassionate and capable young people.
Our recent Ofsted report captured this powerfully, stating that:
“The school’s approach to developing the whole child through rich opportunities is exceptional.”
“The school has a strong vision that every pupil gets the chance to shine.”
“It is a truly inclusive place.” [10343825 -...48 - DRAFT | PDF]
These phrases reflect what we believe and what we live out daily.
A Rich Landscape of Opportunity
We provide an extensive range of clubs and experiences that broaden children’s horizons and help them discover their talents. Our clubs span from football, netball and multisports to art, craft and creative activities. Every lunchtime, our Forest School Club gives children who enjoy hands-on, imaginative outdoor play the freedom to thrive.
Children in Years 4 and 5 enjoy memorable residential visits that build independence, teamwork, and resilience. Across the school, we ensure every year group has exciting workshops and visits linked to their curriculum topics—for example, welcoming the Rainforest Man or the Roman Man to bring learning vividly to life.
We take part enthusiastically in community and sporting events, including the KS2 swimming from Year 1 to Year 5, culminating in the annual gala—where we are proud current Division 1 champions.
Leadership, Character & Responsibility
Leadership is embedded in the culture of our school. Children can serve as:
- Head Boy and Head Girl
- Eco Committee members
- Play Leaders
- House Captains
- Worship leaders through JAM Club
These roles nurture confidence, public speaking, teamwork and service. As Ofsted noted:
“There are a range of opportunities to develop leadership skills. Pupils lead assemblies, take part in public speaking, engage in entrepreneurial work and raise money for charities.” [10343825 -...48 - DRAFT | PDF]
Our school mantra—“Win well, lose well”—cultivates resilience, sportsmanship and humility in all competitive contexts.
Celebrating Individuality, Inclusion & Wellbeing
Our commitment to “body, spirit and mind” drives our holistic approach. Ofsted praised our strong focus on wellbeing:
“The school’s focus on prioritising mental health is a praiseworthy aspect of its work.” ["We are fortunate to have a dedicated play therapist, mental health champions, and the much-adored therapy dog, Rex, who offers gentle support to children who need emotional reassurance.
Children with SEND are fully included in every aspect of school life. Our PE Sports Leader, Mr Richmond, ensures that all children, including those with additional needs, have access to competitive sports.
Festivals, Community & Joy
The cultural life of the school is vibrant and joyful. We embrace a wide range of special days and celebrations, including:
- World Book Day
- Chinese New Year
- Easter Bonnet Parade
- Harvest Festival
- European Day of Languages
- Christmas performances
- World Kindness Day
- Summer Fayre and school discos
Our strong PTA—Friends of Sedgeberrow School (FOSS)— plays a crucial role in enriching these experiences, organising events such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day activities, discos and community celebrations and much more.
A Truly Inclusive Playground
Playtimes are thoughtfully structured with a variety of zones designed to meet different needs—active play, creative play, calm spaces, team games—ensuring that every child has a place where they feel comfortable, welcomed and engaged.
A School Where Every Child Can Shine.
Our Ofsted rating of Outstanding for Personal Development reflects what makes Sedgeberrow special. As the report affirms:
“Sedgeberrow Primary is a school which encourages and nurtures pupils to be their true selves.”
“Positive relationships contribute directly to pupils feeling so happy in school.” "Our aim is simple: that every child experiences joy, success and the feeling of achievement—whether on stage during the annual talent show, in a sports competition, through music lessons (guitar and ukulele), in the classroom, or while exploring the woods at lunchtime.
There is always something happening at Sedgeberrow—and every moment is designed to help children grow not just academically, but personally, emotionally, socially and spiritually.
It is the sum of all these parts that makes our Personal Development offer truly outstanding.
